AVIVA SINGAPORE OPEN 2008 DAY 3 - Underdogs Shine in Lion City PDF Print E-mail

ImageAs if Firdasari’s rout of top-seeded Pi Hongyan earlier in the day was a sign, more upsets were created as numerous unseeded players continued to topple the favorites in round 2 of the Aviva Singapore Open 2008. Following the Indonesian’s footsteps were local hope Xing Aiying, Vietnam's Nguyen Tien Minh and Kuan Beng Hong of Malaysia.

The Aviva Singapore Open lost its defending men’s singles champion after Kuan Beng Hong dashed Boonsak Ponsana’s hope of advancing to the quarterfinals. The close three-setter, which finished 16-21, 22-20, 21-17, was brimmed with sharp placing of shuttles as both players tried to outwit each other on the court. Boonsak repeatedly displayed wonderful backhand smashes in his attempt to break through Kuan’s solid-as-a-wall defence today and the Thai was able to nick the first game.

Top-seeded Lee Chong Wei was one of those who did not have as easy a way as predicted. After an easy 21-11 win in the first game against Sho Sasaki, Lee was taken by surprise by his Japanese opponent, who was able to pick up his pace and take the second game 22-20. Fortunately, Lee was able to find his usual rhythm again in the deciding game and denied the Japanese entry to the next round with a quick 21-8 win.
