The first night of the 2008 Thomas and Uber Cup finals ended turbulently with the Indonesian men’s team barely surviving their first round tie as they dug deep to squeeze past an inspired Thailand team 3-2. Day 2 of the 2008 Thomas and Uber Cup has started off in a seemingly turbulent fashion with the Korean wave hitting the Senayan Stadium, only more deliberately so.

Korea made it clear to their opponents that are on a tactical mission in their quest to bring home the elusive Thomas Cup. Their line-up against a full strength English team was more creative than the one they deployed against Malaysia in the Asian qualifying final back in February. (See related article here.)

2008 TUC Day 1: Home Crowd Keeps Host Alive in Group of Death

The atmosphere inside the Senayan Stadium was absolutely electric on the opening day of the Thomas and Uber Cup finals. The infamous raucous crowd of Indonesian badminton fans has successfully summoned the ghosts of Uber Cup past as the 2008 edition kicked off with a true classic unearthed from the history of the Uber Cup. By Jan Lin, reporting live from Senayan Stadium, Jakarta. Photos: Badmintonphoto (live) It is surreal to open the 2008 Uber Cup finals with the age-old Japan-Indonesia showdown, which dates back from before the beginning of China's domination of the Uber Cup, which has lasted since 1984. During the 13 years between 1968 and 1981, Japan and Indonesia faced off against each other in 6 consecutive Uber Cup finals.

WORLD UNIVERSITY CHAMPS - Doubles Double for Kunchala
After dominating the doubles in the team competition earlier in the week, China was left with only their two singles competitors on finals day of the World University Badminton Championships, but both Wang Yihan and Du Pengyu delivered golds to bring China's total to three on the week. Thailand continued to show off the prowess of its university students as Kunchala Voravichitchaikul (photo) nabbed both the women's and mixed doubles titles.

When play began in Braga with the semi-finals at 9AM Saturday, China looked poised to do its usual domination act. In the team competition, the Chinese had cruised to the gold dropping only a single match and the perpetrator of that defeat, Kazushi Yamada of Japan, had been beaten a day earlier by Liao Sheng-Shiun of Chinese Taipei.

WORLD UNIVERSITY CHAMPS - Chinese Team Stands Tall

China managed to erase the memory of last summer's loss at the 2007 Universiade by winning the rematch with Thailand by a resounding 3-0 in the final of the World University Badminton Championships.

Both China and Thailand were without the big guns who represented them in Bangkok in August. Chen Hong and Boonsak Ponsana have either graduated or are busy with Thomas Cup preparations. That didn't hurt the action. The final started with a 3-game win by Sun Junjie / Sun Xiaoli over Patiphat Chalardchalaem / Kunchala Voravichitchaikul.

WORLD UNIVERSITY CHAMPS - Students Surprise in Singles
At the World University Badminton Championships in Braga Portugal, the men's singles results were almost completely opposite to the received wisdom in world badminton. In the mixed team action, traditional powerhouses in the discipline China, Malaysia, Indonesia, and Korea all lost vital points. Meanwhile, as yet undefeated Salakjit Ponsana (pictured) has led Thailand to the finals, where they will face China in a repeat of the 2007 Universiade.

The early round action saw the start of the anomaly as Indonesia, who did finally top Group C, was clearly hurting from the absence of Tommy Sugiarto and Alamsyah Yunus, who had stood strong last August. Achmad Rivai, not among the 25 Indonesians with BWF rankings, lost the first of many matches as Indonesia started their campaign with a 4-1 win over Spain.
