OLYMPICS – Dream Shattered for Yao Jie PDF Print E-mail

ImageImageIn spite of being still on the BWF list of qualified players and clearly deserving her spot in China this summer, Yao Jie will not participate in the Olympics as her National Olympic Committee rejected her last appeal this weekend. The former Chinese will stay home during the Games just like all her teammates.

The hopes were slim. They have now vanished for good. Yao Jie will not participate in the Olympics after a last appeal was finally rejected by a commission this weekend. Although she had failed to meet the criteria given by the Dutch Olympic Committee, the former Chinese player had been hoping for a last minute miracle, as she had been in great form recently, beating no less than the main favourite for the Olympic title, Xie Xingfang, a few weeks ago in Jakarta.

YONEX OCBC US OPEN – Halim back? PDF Print E-mail
ImageHalim Haryanto, who has been a sparring coach for the USA for 5 years now, won a silver and a gold medal at the Yonex OCBC US Open this Saturday in Orange County, California, proving that he is still very fit.

It has been a long time, now, since Halim Haryanto (photo) left Indonesia for sunny California and became a sparring partner and coach for the US Badminton Federation. He followed in the footsteps of former partner Tony Gunawan, who had left Indonesia and represented USA to win Gold in the 2005 World Championships. If Halim had a lower profile, he also stayed in the shadow during his post career years, allowing himself to play in the local event.

ROBOT VIETNAM INT'L CHALLENGE - Malaysia Takes Three PDF Print E-mail
ImageAfter losing out to the eventual winner last year, Nguyen Tien Minh scored a nail-biter over Malaysia's Chong Wei Feng to take back the title he first won in 2006. Chong Wei Feng was the only Malaysian on the day to cede gold to another country, however, as his compatriots picked up 3 more titles along with two silvers that happened to come in all-Malaysian finals.

WHITE NIGHTS – Double Gold for Russia on Home Soil PDF Print E-mail
ImageAs the Olympics draw ever closer, many of the top European pairs headed to Gatchina, near St Petersburg, in Russia to fine tune their game in the last competitive European tournament before the Games next month. It proved to be a productive event for the home players as Russia scored wins in both the women’s and mixed doubles events.

ASIAN JUNIORS - Korean Singles Targeting Gold PDF Print E-mail
ImageAfter a disappointing showing last year when, as defending champions, they crashed out of the team competition in the quarter-finals, Korea will be in the hunt for gold in Kuala Lumpur when they change peninsulae next weekend. The members of the Korean National Junior Team who will be representing the country at the Asian Junior Championships from July 13th to 20th are currently engaged in a special 8-day prepatory training session, where Head Coach Lee Deuk Choon and some of his top players took the time to talk to Badzine about the team's prospects for 2008.
