It was recently, in the midst of the Japan Open, that I noticed that there was something missing on the shirts of players who had been crowned World or Olympic Champions. No one can see the different between them and the rest of the world…That ain't right!
Editorial by Raphael Sachetat, Badzine's Chief Editor I then thought to myself that a good idea would be for World and Olympic champions to wear a star for each title. This would look really nice – for Lin Dan to have 4 stars on his jersey, just like the football team after their world title. I know that T-shirts from the French football team sold by the million after their 1998 World Cup victory, even to those who already had the old jerseys – the ones without the stars. A marketing coup from which badminton could learn as T-shirts would then earn value along the way! One must have respect for such achievements, and titles like these would always remain in the mind of spectators and TV viewers, who would easily be able to spot the number of stars on a player’s shirt. And the oddest thing occurred a few minutes after I had this idea: I came across Kamilla Rytter Juhl’s T-shirt with my camera zoom. And there I saw that someone had had the exact same idea – Martin Lundgaard to be precise, who is in charge of Juhl’s sponsor. I had just thought about it, and here it was, on a player’s shirt…. After being a bit shocked by the fact that I just thought of something – for the first time in 10 years covering badminton – and the fact that I was actually seeing it for the first time ever – I realized that it looked really neat on her shirt. A golden star! I would actually put two different types of stars. Silver ones for world titles, and gold ones for Olympic gold medals. Zhang Ning could even have two on her coach's jackets! Lin Dan one gold and three silver ones. That would look really awesome. Oh well. It’s just an idea I had that I will share with my friends from the circuit...and see if they like it! As for the idea which is even more precious for me to make come true: the upcoming foundation we are starting soon. It's called SOLIBAD and you'll hear about it very shortly!
