To the public’s eye, the success of a sporting event is often measured in terms of the attendance of the players, the death-defying draws and perhaps, just the sheer prestige of the event itself. It is very easy to overlook the contributions of behind-the-scenes’ participants, of whom in their absence, the event may not even have been staged.

 Danger lurked everywhere and there was no way out of the dragon's den for Lee Chong Wei last night. The Malaysian found himself trapped in Lin Dan's flawless set-up to safeguard the last piece of badminton gold ware at the 2008 Beijing Olympic Games. Earning only consolation points from their 21-12, 21-8 men's singles final, Chong Wei was forced to retreat into his own tiger's den.

 The number '8' is regarded an auspicious number for the Chinese, which explains the obsession of having the Games' Opening Ceremony to commence at 8pm on the 8th day of the 8th month of year 2008. Yet, day 8 of the 2008 Beijing Olympic Games was far from auspicious for the host, as China tasted a mouthful of defeats that might have overshadowed the couple of victories today.
