More than 800 players descended on Sydney Olympic Park, Australia, this weekend to participate in badminton at the 2009 World Masters Games, thus making it the biggest badminton event the city has hosted. Badminton is one of the 28 sports featured in this edition with participants ranging from 35 through to 84 years old. Taking into account the size of the event (including open, competitive and recreational divisions), time constrictions and player's ages, the Badminton World Federation (BWF) approved a best of 3 games modified to 15-rally-points system and many playing on Day 1 have welcomed its suitableness. Djarum Indonesia's players whose lineup go by the moniker of Musica Fly Power are the ones to chase for the gold medal in the team event, which began first. The individual events begin on Tuesday, October 14. The last time in Melbourne in 2002, world #1 Lee Chong Wei's mentor Misbun Sidek of Malaysia won men's singles in the 35+ premier division. One of the legends of world badminton, Ms. Li Lingwei, is the ambassador for badminton at these Games. Badzine correspondent, Aaron Wong.
