The draws for the 2009 Hong Kong Open Super Series have been released and reveal a very strong field despite a rash of late withdrawals. The men's singles, in particular, will see two first round matchups that are repeats of recent major finals with Lin Dan vs. Sony Dwi Kuncoro (WC 2007) and Andre Tedjono Kurniawan vs. Nguyen Tien Minh (2008 Vietnam Open). Hong Kong's own Hu Yun, the Philippine Open runner-up, will try his hand against Chen Jin on the first day as well. Korea is back in action and Park Sung Hwan will have a tough matchup against Chen Long while Jung/Lee will attempt to avoid being embarrassed early again by China's Guo/Xu as they were in Singapore in the spring. Other first round men's doubles matchups that promise thrills are Gunawan/Chandra vs. Ahsan/Septano in a Philippine Open final rematch and Gunawan/Bach vs. Koo/Tan, who last met in a tight World Championship quarter-final. Women's singles features Wang Chen and four Wangs from China in a full-strength field. Women's and mixed doubles will see a collection of new partnerships involving the likes of Zhang Yawen, Kim Min Jung, Lee Kyung Won, Zhao Yunlei, and, of course, Flandy Limpele.
