With the release of the World Rankings list every Thursday we are all guilty of looking at the top of the tree in all events to see who is number one and who has shown form to break into the elite and coveted top ten.
Take a look further down the list, though, and you will see something remarkable. In just five weeks, Olga Konon, on the back of a string of impressive tournament results, has climbed from a lowly 195th in the world to now sit at #67. Konon earned 2750 points for a quarter-final finish at the Bitburger Open, which was her major tournament comeback. This was followed by a semi-final appearance at the Dutch Open, which netted her 3500 World Ranking points. In her first ever Denmark Open appearance, she bagged 3600 points for her second round appearance after coming through qualification and then to round it all off, and again with a trip through qualification, Konon got to the quarter-final of the French Open Super Series, where she caught the eyes of the world in beating China's rising star Wang Shixian to collect 5050 points. And as if to act as a justification for her rise up the world rankings, Konon defeated Juliane Schenk, the world number 11, in a club match in Germany this week which solidifies the belief that Konon is certainly one to watch, not just for the future, but in the coming months. Badzine would also like to wish Olga a very happy birthday this week. The Belarusian national turns 20 on the 11th of November. Newer news items:
