The 2009 Li Ning China Open Super Series began with qualifying rounds yesterday but, as is now de rigeur in the Super Series, the week's big, early story was the late withdrawals.  Shanghai has been passed over by three seeded singles players as well as two more of last week's quarter-finalists, as Taufik Hidayat, Peter Gade, Zhou Mi, Tago Kenichi, and Mohd Hafiz Hashim all stopped short of the mainland on their China tour.

In men's doubles, Fu/Cai are still in the men's doubles draw for the time being but 7th-seeded Mohd Fairuzizuan Mohd Tazari / Mohd Zakry Abdul Latif withdrew, no doubt to the relief of Korea's Cho Gun Woo, 3 of whose Super Series campaigns last year ran up against the Malaysian duo.

Even qualifying day was affected, as Asian Junior Champion Chen Xiaojia ceded a walkover to compatriot Xia Jingyun.  The 18-year-old is still set to feature in the women's doubles.
